When To Go To Europe

Western Europe

IncludesAndorra, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom

As a popular destination, it is best to visit Western Europe in the shoulder seasons to avoid crowds, get better deals for budget travel, and explore in a more moderate climate. Spring season between April and May is the best time to see vibrant wildflower blooms, hike, and see cultural heritage sites in cooler weather. Autumn, between September and October, is the best time to soak up the fall foliage in the Alps.

  • Tulip Festival, Netherlands – March-May
  • Oktoberfest, Germany – October
  • Krampus Festival, Austria – December
  • St. Patrick’s Day, Ireland – March 17
  • Formula One Grand Prix, Monaco – May
  • King’s Day, Netherlands – April 27
  • Running of the Bulls, Spain – July 7-14
  •

Northern Europe

Includes: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden

Depending on what you’re interested in, Northern Europe could be visited year-round! The summer months of June-August offer the warmest temperatures for hiking and camping. Although for the winter enthusiasts, skiing under the northern lights sounds pretty good too!

  • Midsommer Night’s Festival, Sweden – June 23 (similar events in other Northern European countries)
  • Northern Lights, multiple countries – November-February

Southern Europe

Includes: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Malta, Montenegro, North Macedonia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovenia, Türkiye, and the Vatican

The shoulder seasons offer pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and lower prices in Southern Europe. Spring offers the best time to get outside to hike among the wildflowers in the Balkans, or soak up the start of the summer sun along the coastline. Autumn in Southern Europe is still quite warm, perfect for a swim without the crowds!

  • Easter, Catholic countries – March-May

Eastern Europe

Includes: Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine

The shoulder seasons again are the best time to visit Eastern Europe, however, in more remote areas, you won’t find many tourists to begin with. Explore medieval towns, vibrant cities, and stunning natural landscapes in every Eastern European country!
